On April 15, 1928, the national currency of Siam (Thailand since 1939) became officially known as the baht (the exchange for the tikal of previous issues was made at a 1:1 ratio). While the baht had previously been the local name for the tikal, since 1928, tikal has become the second name for the national currency of Thailand.
From 1902 to January 18, 2012, 16 series of Thai banknotes were issued, not counting 13 series of commemorative banknotes issued for various holidays. Modern banknotes feature a distinctly national character and feature a portrait of King Bhumibol Adulyadej. This portrait is also featured as a watermark. The denominations are also indicated in Arabic numerals. Paper banknotes in denominations of 20, 50, 100, 500, and 1,000 baht are in circulation.
